The young girls learn sewing at a young age so maybe a personal sewing kit of their own with scissors, thimbles, seam ripper, etc. For children, simple toys like baseball, badmitton, etc. For men maybe some men’s hand cream, socks (or do the women knit them?). Since I live in Florida I would bring them fresh citrus in season as well.

While I love and adore my friend, i would never give her or do anything that would disrespect that. I really do love the simple lifestyle and she and I have had some really good conversations about the pros and cons and how we both feel. I will stop rambling now, but yes we are very close. If not, I have given blankets and diapers that were always well received. As far as cloth diapers, I live in Lancaster County and have yet to meet an Amish mother with 6 kids that uses them. In fact, my Amish friends looked shocked that I used them with only one child. We have Mennonite friends and I've often done fruit baskets - great for the whole family. Not specific to that child, but a treat for everyone.

Both had chosen a blanket of gray and white. I felt like that was due to them being OOA whereas I would have gotten something more colorful, not thinking. They themselves wear some pretty colorful dresses, all of them except my friend who tends to wear mostly dark dresses. A home made dinner like a big lasagna or roast chicken enough for the entire family is always appreciated.

I, of course, knew she could go out to dinner. We go out to dinner all the time, well when we can afford it. We have this problem in spades as you can imagine. We continue our own practice of giving gifts for Christmas, birthdays, etc. We know our son, Ed, understands and appreciates it, but are not sure about Ruth.

I have the greatest respect for the Amish and the choices they have made, and feel honored to have these folks among those I call friends. They just had a baby (their seventh!) and we would like to give them something appropriate. The other kids range in age from 5 to 17, and the new mom and dad certainly have plenty of help with the little one . If you have an Amish store nearby, find a baby item there.

Some do wear simple jewelry, it varies alot as to how conservative the church is. Many shops in the area where I grew up sell Vera Bradley, and the shops are mennonite owned. I see alot of Mennonite ladies carrying Vera Bradley Bags. My children are grown, and I now have a granddaughter. One of the most played with gifts I ever gave my son and daughter was a kitchen set with a grocery cart and food and a tool bench with moveable parts. Alice Mary I think it’s a safe bet some families trade or at least offer goods or services of some sorts for rides, say those given by neighbors or friends.

The only thing that comes to mind is that the plainest Amish do not generally hire vehicles for things like shopping trips so helps if there is one within buggying distance. Another idea that comes to mind is something commemorating the baby’s birth. For instance, some Amish families hang framed print images with the child’s name and birth date.
