Séances at the White House? Why these first ladies turned to the occult

Nearly half of the building, located at the corner of Harwood Street and Woodall Rodgers Freeway, has been pre-leased to Charlotte financial institution Bank of America. Still, according to Eggen, who was previously the managing director of Qualcomm Ventures North America, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns in CVC land. The environment for CVCs, Eggen says, is actually kind of mixed right now—some CVCs are dialing back investments, while others are doubling down. By World War II, spiritualism no longer attracted the acolytes it once had, and White House séances became a curious footnote in history.

To make solid venture investments, a CVC needs to be able to think and act independently of the more entrenched ideas that a parent company might have. And though returning capital is important, it’s not the only thing that matters—large companies also expect strategic gains, whether that’s new technology or a new product geared towards the company’s customers. “More than 70 new CVC units started in 2023, and the number of corporate venture capital organizations grew 10x over the last decade,” said Sneha Shah, EVP and head of new business ventures at SEI, via email. Some reports estimate that there are as many as 2,000 CVCs, up from several hundred in 2021. Corporate venture capital, or CVC, is a bridge between the public and private markets.

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Lincoln biographer David Herbert Donald used surviving documents to calculate that the first lady may have held eight séances in the White House. The boy’s death devastated both his parents, but Mary Todd Lincoln’s grief was especially debilitating. She stayed in bed for weeks and couldn’t bear to attend his funeral. But even when she rejoined society, Lincoln longed for a reunion with her deceased son.

Lincoln was killed before their eyes. Then their own horror began.

The White House was again in a state of mourning during the presidency of Calvin Coolidge in 1924. Coolidge’s 16-year-old son Calvin played a game of tennis––but he wasn’t wearing socks with his shoes. A blister formed on a toe and festered, and the infection turned septic. National and personal tragedy converged in the thick of the Civil War when Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln buried one of their children. On February 20, 1862, 11-year-old Willie Lincoln died in the White House after battling typhoid fever for weeks.

No one knows what exactly occurred between Pierce and the Fox sisters. But the White House session may have mirrored the Fox sisters’ other séances, which commenced with guests sitting in a circle, holding one another’s hands, and reciting a prayer. Then, the rappings would begin, and the sisters would allegedly lift the veil on the spirit world.

What Is A Relational Database RDBMS?

The text handles this issue as well as any, however, and doesn't delve into most of the areas where implementations differ the most. Adding glossary and index, however, would help readers locate important concepts more easily. Remember that continuous learning is key in this ever-evolving tech world! For example, an integrity rule can specify that duplicate rows are not allowed in a table in order to eliminate the potential for erroneous information entering the database. It’s a fascinating realm where I’ll guide you through some practical examples. Database design, at its core, is about creating efficient systems that meet user requirements while optimizing performance. After listing your entities and attributes, use them to design the structure of your relational database. Your list of entities will become separate tables in your base, and the list of attributes will become the fields for these tables. With the spread of personal computing and the rise of the internet in the early 1990s, however, unstructured data — such as email messages, photos, videos, etc. — became more common.

SQL Basics

A relational database won’t commit for one part until it knows it can commit for all three. Atomicity is the key to keeping data accurate in the database and ensuring that it is compliant with the rules, regulations, and policies of the business. Peering into the future of database design, it’s clear that several trends are emerging.

Design Patterns for Relational Databases

It’s all about making databases easy to maintain while improving data consistency and being cost-effective. In the world of database management systems (DBMS), it’s crucial to have a solid grasp on database design and data modeling. This isn’t just some arcane tech jargon; these concepts are fundamental building blocks in creating efficient, effective databases. Without them, you’re essentially navigating a ship without a compass. The primary benefit of the relational database approach is the ability to create meaningful information by joining the tables.

relational database design

Guidelines (usually in terms of what not to do instead of what to do) are provided in making these design decision, but the choices ultimately rest on the you - the designer. It accuracy is very good and it admits is covers most topics in databases. It's a great intro to databases book. For example, both chapters 10 and 11 begin by introducing the concept of functional dependency. I would have expected the concept to be fully defined and explained in one chapter or the other, not both, or at the very least make it clear that the concept is broken up into multiple chapters. Some topics seemed to appear out of the blue in the middle of some chapters without warning. Chapters were inconsistent in terms of their length and the depth and care with which they treated a subject.

Optimizing SQL Queries for Performance

The topic here is traditional theory which does not change quickly as typical IT topics do. Any updates should be easily implemented, but very few would be expected. The book contains the Table of Contents and lists Key Terms for every Chapter. However, it will be better to include Index with corresponding page numbers and/or hyperlinks.

The key factor here is the effective correlation and storage of data elements – this is what makes or breaks a well-designed database system. While relational databases have historically been viewed as a more rigid and inflexible data storage option, advances in technology and DBaaS options are changing that perception. While there is still more overhead to develop schemas compared to NoSQL database offerings, relational databases are becoming more flexible as they migrate to cloud environments. A very useful intermediate step between getting the requirements and implementing our database in SQL is creating an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD). This is, as you might anticipate, a diagram which maps the relationships between the entities that we will build into our database.

The column teacherID in the child table Classes is known as the foreign key. A foreign key of a child table is a primary key of a parent table, used to reference the parent table. Part of the programming within a RDBMS is accomplished using stored procedures (SPs). Often procedures can be used to greatly reduce the amount of information transferred within and outside of a system.

SQL Tutorial Course from Craig Dickson

Learn about IBM Db2, the cloud-native database built to power low-latency transactions and real-time analytics at scale. Here we are storing the client_name, address and industry attributes, alongside a unique client_id. Bear in mind that a real requirements document will likely be longer and more complex than this, but this one will give us the information we need to build our example database. The school has clients, each of whom may offer multiple courses via the school.

That isn't something I'd necessary expect that such a text would definitely have, however. This is very much a Database Design text, not a Database Implementation text, and in those grounds is reasonably comprehensive. The text covers much of the terminology I would want students to become familiar with, as well as the major concepts required for understanding database systems in the abstract. The text is on the shorter side, so some concepts are covered only briefly, or not at all. A course covering that material in depth would want to supplement this text. The text is very short - just 126 pages, plus the Appendices. Well, it ensures the creation of high-performing systems that are easy to maintain and cost-effective in terms of disk storage space.

But don’t worry, I’ve got some tips to help you enhance your skills. These were popular in the early days of database design and resemble a tree-like structure where each record has one parent record and many children. As each product can have one and only one brand, it makes perfect sense to store the unique identifier of that brand (in our example, the brand name) as an attribute of that product. Next, create a separate list containing the relevant attributes for each of the entities you’ve identified. Attributes are the defining characteristics of those entities, like “name,” “quantity,” “address,” “phone number,” or “genre.” These attributes will become the fields for your tables.

In the relational model, each table contains at least one column that can be used to uniquely identify each row, called a primary key. This is important, because it means that users don’t need to know where their data is physically stored on a machine; instead, their DBMS can keep track of each record and return them on an ad hoc basis. In turn, this means that records have no defined logical order, and users have the ability to return their data in whatever order or through whatever filters they wish. In the relational model, a table cannot contain duplicate rows, because that would create ambiguities in retrieval.

Commissioners said they declined the property owners’ earlier invite to tour the interior of the building after Foley, the dismissed executive director, cited concerns with possible open meeting law violations, but agreed to schedule a site visit before taking a vote on the landmarking designation. Your choice of food is cooked fresh right in front of you. The price is about $38 each with additional 18% service charge. The differing approach by both sides — in terms of the board’s desire for autonomy and the administration’s push for inclusion in the City Hall process — contributed to the mayor’s decision to fire the Commission’s longtime executive director, Rosanne Foley, this month, per internal communications obtained by the Herald. Amid its spat with the Wu administration, the Boston Landmarks Commission is being accused of overreaching its authority by pushing to designate the interior of a private property a historic landmark to kill the owners’ housing development plans. Wu, a longtime resident of San Francisco’s posh Pacific Heights neighborhood, helped launch Opendoor in 2014.

Leaving the print curtains open, you can enjoy filtered natural light with some privacy from the sheer curtain. After a quick peruse through these designs, you'll have a vision in mind. Oh and once you have your hands on them, make sure to refer to our how to hang curtains guide for quick and smooth installation.

Color Block Living Room Curtains

Decorative trim is available in a variety of styles, from pom-pom and colorful fringe to tassel and beads, and it’s an inexpensive way to dress up window treatments and give them a custom look. When a space is filled with patterns, colors and textures, solid-color curtains can help to balance the look. Here, designer Katie Davis dresses two windows identically for added symmetry. Utilize curtains to create a living space filled with contrast, as design firm Daley Home does here. Light gray drapes are hung high on industrial-inspired black curtain rods that match the black window trim. Balancing natural light and privacy needs, determine whether you'd prefer to allow sunlight to cascade through sheer curtains or require the shading of blackout curtains.

Bold orange patterned drapes steal the show in this inviting living room. The brown leather upholstery used for the armchair and ottomans, along with the graphic throw pillows, complement the long window treatments. You may not expect that daring drapes complement a floral patterned wallpaper, but this striking living room is proof. You never go wrong with classic vertical striped curtains, especially when elegantly paired with a valance. It's not necessarily just a practical piece of hardware; a curtain rod can add visual interest and help dress up your windows.

Sheer Living Room Curtains

You can go bold—like the all-over prints Heidi Caillier selected in a home outside Seattle—or keep things classic, as with the elegant Roman shades in Julia Reed’s New Orleans home. If choosing curtains for your living room feels daunting, we definitely understand. There are so many existing colors, styles, and patterns to choose from, or you can consider going the custom route, which opens up another world of possibilities altogether! If you're still working on narrowing down your ideal curtain style, we're sharing 23 inspirational rooms below featuring a whole mix of curtain choices, all of which are extremely well executed. If you're lucky enough to have a wall of windows in your living room, consider hanging curtains instead of blinds. A wall of curtains gives the illusion of a larger, deeper space and adds an elegant feel to the room.

Living Room Curtain Ideas for Style and Privacy

If your living room is east or north-facing, it's likely to suffer from a lack of natural daylight. Hanging a pale-colored curtain fabric can maximize natural light, while a delicate pattern like this will create a restful feel. Picking out the fabric's bolder accent colors in cushions and upholstery will give the space a more contemporary finish. When choosing curtains, you will want to consider your window's shape as well as its size.

living room curtain design

Perhaps you love dramatic curtain details, or elegant design enchants you. When sophistication and opulence are the goals, valance curtains help you achieve them by adding style, formality, and dimension to your living room window treatments. Standard panel curtains hang on either side of the window, but the valance frames the top, often covering the hardware used to hang the curtains. Keep the room light and airy by choosing neutral colors for your living room curtains. Not only do neutral tones make a space feel bigger, but these hues also offer a timeless style for a living room.

They serve as a stylish backdrop for the equally as chic blue velvet curved sofa. While curtains can serve as a focal point, they can also look beautiful when blending into the background. Beige drapes hung on sleek black rods add an elegant appeal to this cozy living room designed by Element Design Network. As much as we cherish natural light, total darkness is a must for movie night. Take note from design firm Truss Interiors and opt for floor-to-ceiling blackout drapes that easily open and close.

Choose silk, linen, or even velvet curtain fabric to make your living room design seem like one that you might see in a movie. In this room by interior designer Kit Kemp, powder blue grasscloth walls are contrasted with patterned, pale pink curtains. To keep the room from feeling too sugary sweet, the duo are paired with crisp whites and modern graphic prints.

He loves inspiring people with interior design ideas and showing them the practical steps to make these happen. The views from this Pebble Beach, California, house are too good to be tampered with. So design firm Workshop/APD ensured that the curtains wouldn’t interfere. Follow suit by selecting a long, semi-sheer neutral for a laid-back vibe.

Curtains in a muted print prevent this neutral beach house from feeling lackluster. Plus, the small curtain rings and expansive curtain rods framing the room make it possible to reconfigure the drapes as needed. Next, measure the window width, as you also want to figure out whether one curtain panel on either side of the window is enough or whether you'll need two on each side. A standard curtain panel is 54 inches wide, and you will want to add at least a foot on either side of the window to allow the curtain rod and the curtains to frame the window without blocking too much light.

Modern Beach House Essentials: Designing Your Coastal Retreat

beach interior design

Subtlety can win the day, and this approach can render a more impactful coastal design. According to Hamwey, it’s best to avoid kitschy or expected decor when creating a coastal interior. “Instead of incorporating elements like shells, starfish, and navy blue stripes, take inspiration from the natural environment for everything from the color palette through to the materials used,” she advises. She recommends leaning into earth tones, natural textures, and thoughtfully layered blues. “This aesthetic is meant to evoke the feelings of relaxation and ease that waterside living brings to everyday life,” she adds.

Design Elements

These initial steps ensure that your beach home perfectly matches your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. In the Hamptons, architects like Bates Masi have made a name for themselves with homes that capture the unique light and landscapes of areas like Southampton and Amagansett. You’ll find that each locale has its unique character that can influence the design of a beachside retreat.

Pick a cool blue for a coastal style hallway

Northern Europeans have been onto this idea for centuries—think handsome, barn-like structures peering off a rugged Danish coast. Patinas often darken over centuries to create a similar monochromatic contrast. "There's something so dramatic about dark shingles or siding with white contrasting trim," says designer Mark D. Sikes.

These materials stand up to the practical demands of beachside living and contribute to the tactile experience that makes the space inviting. Your living space extends beyond the interior, with large windows and outdoor areas that make the ocean an integral part of your daily experience. Hence, you would want to go for a lighter, pale shade of wood used in your dining tables, chairs, and coffee table. Wood is not a necessity, but wood is a widely used element that cannot be discarded in most cases. In a nutshell, you need to keep in mind that the selected wood should bring about light, airy and breezy emotions in the space.

As a beachy interior design copies the warmth from a sunny day at the beach, cold light will feel out of place. Instead, choose a combination of layered lighting that works well together. Task lighting can have a cooler hue but accent and task lighting are better warm. With insight and inspiration, you can certainly pull off an elegant beach house interior design. As one of the top interior design styles, beach-themed interiors can soothe and calm through design. All in all, it comes down to what makes them so relaxing and aesthetically pleasing.

We Create Meaningful Spaces with Personal Touches

“A beachy design is rooted in creating a serene aesthetic through the use of breezy linens, light wood tones, and a muted color palette to inherently translate feelings of relaxation,” says Hamwey. In a beach house you’ll see more natural oak tones, relaxed linen textiles, and accents of Aegean blue compared to a coastal home. Refreshing and relaxing is what a home with a beachy interior design feels like. Crisp whites and neutrals form the basis of coastal interior design, and the lighter, the better. Light walls will certainly make the interior feel roomier and crips white linen can add a holiday touch to a home.

Old Florida Fish House: A lakeside oasis and getaway in the middle of it all

old florida fish house

The O’Learys started with Coastside 30A, a retail store selling beer and wine, plus a tasting area to commune over beverages. Then they added coffee at Beachy Bean where remote workers and caffeine-seekers can get their fix. You can get coffee in the morning, lunch in the afternoon, and close out the day with some drinks and entertainment. Lakefront Living Realty offices are full service real estate brokerages with a mission to passionately unite buyers and sellers of lakefront property.

Buying Lakefront Property

It’s a mesmerizing setting that captures the essence of 30A and old Florida charm. The Old Florida Fish House is a charming and historic restaurant on 30A in Seagrove Beach. Nestled along the pristine shores of Eastern Lake, a rare coastal dune lake, the Fish House offers lakeside dining with views of the Gulf.

Almost every seat in the house has a sunset view over the lake every night. The Old Florida Fish House is more than just a restaurant; it’s a gathering place where friendships are forged and memories are made. Locals and tourists alike come together to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. Live music fills the air, adding an extra layer of merriment to the festivities.

FEATURED FLORIDA LAKES AND HOMES

Butter and parmesan-drenched grilled oysters are the main attraction for those who enjoy them New Orleans style. Raw oysters are sourced from the best providers available during the optimal harvest and season, including Canada, Virginia, and the Gulf. Since its founding, the Fish House’s menu and ambiance have evolved and improved. Old oak trees adorned with Spanish moss still greet guests entering the grounds.

This year, the Fish House was selected to be one of approximately 50 restaurants in the US to be certified to serve Kobe beef from Japan. There are only six other restaurants in Florida certified to sell Kobe in Florida. In addition to Hida and Kobe beef, the Fish House offers Snow Beef from Chateau Uenae, Miyazaki Beef, as well as Olive fed and Drunken Wagyu. Offerings include aged bluefin and uni (the edible part of a sea urchin).

DJ sources the best sushi ingredients from all over the world, including BlueFin tuna from the Mediterranean and Japan, Scallops and uni from Hokkaido Japan, and A-5 wagyu beef from all over Japan. A local buyer bids on tuna, uni, scallops and wagyu at the Toyosu market in Japan each week. Reservations are accepted year-round, including for large groups.

There is the natural beauty of Eastern Lake right off the outdoor dining area where you can climb the platform and snap a sunset photo. There is the stocked sushi bar filled with boisterous diners enjoying the band. There is the little corner table in the back where a couple can enjoy a quiet, romantic evening dining on fresh gulf seafood. There is the oyster bar where you can catch the game and throw back some beers while slurping freshly-shucked gulf coast bivalves. There’s cornhole; there are top-shelf spirits; there’s even a garden growing fresh herbs and peppers for the bar. Inside there are several different dining areas, including the lower dining room with views of Eastern Lake, the sushi bar and oyster bar.

Meet Our Local Wellness Pro: Dr. Jake Hawkins!

Steeped in tradition and brimming with character, this iconic fish house has been a beloved fixture of the local 30A community since 2005. With its rustic ambiance, delectable seafood, and breathtaking views, it continues to enchant visitors from far and wide. Oh, and also, Nana’s garden, a beautiful herb and vegetable garden. All are scratch kitchens, meaning all ingredients are prepared in-house. The main kitchen continues to serve fresh gulf-caught seafood, such as grouper and red snapper.

We’re trying to offer a variety of experiences for whatever you’re in the mood for,” said Keith. The sushi kitchen and bar, led by Chef DJ McCracken, is the second kitchen at the Fish House. As one of the top sushi chefs in the Southeast, Chef DJ combines exceptional skill with the freshest sushi ingredients to provide a one-of-a-kind culinary experience.

“We are unique on 30A for what we offer as a destination venue,” Wilson said. Whatever you’re in the mood for, it’s come as you are at Old Florida Fish House. Old Florida Fish House has been a staple for good seafood since opening in 2005, and the O’Learys didn’t want to tinker with that.

Next door, Coastside 30A offers retail items, as well as craft beer and fine wine. Beach Bean Coffee serves up quality coffee and food during the day. In addition to serving delicious food from multiple kitchens, the Fish House offers several unique ways to experience the Old Florida lifestyle. One highlight is its open-air patio, providing panoramic views of Eastern Lake and glittering Gulf waters. As you savor your meal, you can bask in the golden rays of the sun, and feel the gentle sea breeze while listening to live music performed by local musicians. In the fall and spring, fire pits provide a cozy warmth for cool evenings.

The restaurant’s new owners, Keith O’Leary and his family, took over the entire three-acre property on the shores of Eastern Lake over three years ago. They have transformed it into a beautiful oasis, nestled in the longleaf pine forests, decorated gorgeously with flowers, greenery, and twinkling lights. In a time that is constantly evolving, the Old Florida Fish House stands as a testament to the importance of preserving history and tradition, while growing and evolving to meet changing tastes and palates. It is a place where the past meets the present, where stories are shared, and where the simple pleasures of good food and good company reign supreme. The third kitchen at the Fish House is the Oyster Bar, which sources the best oysters from all over the US and Canada.

The renovated main bar is inside, where live music is performed most nights, year-round. In its third year at the Fish House, dueling pianos is a popular show that runs up to five nights per week, depending on the season. On other nights, local favorites perform both inside and outside, depending on the weather.

And you never have to wonder what the catch of the day is because the chalkboard menu that greets visitors upon entry showcases the fresh gulf seafood available daily. From the dock, you can order it blackened, grilled, or sauteed with lemon beurre blanc and seasonal vegetables. Or you can opt for one of their signature specialties like the Grouper Fish House with a bounty of crab, and shrimp atop that fresh-from-the-water grouper filet served with green beans and smashed red potatoes. The Fish House’s expert chefs, Thomas Stuckenborg and Ron White, pay homage to traditional recipes, while also infusing their own creative flair to create a truly memorable dining experience. In addition to traditional seafood dishes, each night the chefs prepare features using the best seasonal ingredients. Recently, a fishing boat captain called Chef Thomas at four in the morning to offer a rare catch of scorpion fish.

Based on the users' feedback on Google, this restaurant deserved 4.2. The restaurant is versatile for whatever type of outing patrons seek. Not just in the array of offerings, but also in the dress, food, and vibe. SEAGROVE BEACH – In addition to high-caliber sushi, fresh fish, and coastal farm-to-table fare, Old Florida Fish House has one of the most stunning outdoor dining areas around.

Dinner Cruise on Lake Conroe

lake conroe dinner cruise

Since opening its doors almost a year ago, the resort has sought to partner with local businesses to truly highlight the surrounding area for guests. Now it is partnering with Little Palm Yacht Charters to serve its guests and the public with sunset dinner cruises. Fortunately, the yacht is climate controlled downstairs and open to the air upstairs.

Cruises:

They have taken groups of people out onto the lake to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and many more special occasions. Now they are partnering with Margaritaville Lake Resort to offer Little Palm Dinner Cruises to the public from the resort. It was also nice to do something different than the standard dinner and movie. I feel like some of the reviews that you find on google are really unfair and unjustified.

We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. The ship sailed a series of 11 cruises from Virginia, including voyages to The Bahamas as well as Bermuda. Carnival Sunshine will offer a variety of 6-8 night sailings with two different itineraries of each length. Depending on departure date, the 6-night cruises will visit either Bimini or Half Moon Cay, and both itinerary options will stop in Nassau. Cruising from Norfolk, Virginia is so appealing to vacationers because of its splendid itineraries to the Bahamas and Caribbean, as well as the awesome attractions you can find before and after your cruise vacation in Norfolk itself.

Vacation Deals

Starting at just $529, choose the perfect cruise from Norfolk that fits your traveling desires. Most commonly, cruises from Norfolk go to exciting destinations such as Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean - All, and Dominican Republic. When you find yourself between the Carnival Sunshine and some actual sunshine, fun at sea is guaranteed.

Day 2: Fun Day at Sea

In 2025 Carnival Cruise Line will have cruises from Norfolk to Bermuda, the Bahamas and Caribbean. Carnival Magic is a Dream-class vessel, with a gross tonnage of 128,000 and a guest capacity of 3,609 passengers at double occupancy. This is just the first phase of what will be the cruise line’s biggest-ever operational schedule from Virginia, with more itineraries to be released in the near future.

Day 5: Grand Turk

carnival cruise from norfolk va

Carnival Cruise Line is providing complimentary bus service between Baltimore and Norfolk, both for embarking as well as debarking guests. The service is limited, however, and travelers need to register to ensure their space on the shuttle. For guests on the April 21 departure, information about shuttle registration will be provided the week of April 15. As the Port of Baltimore and Port of Norfolk are approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) apart, roughly a 4-5 hour drive depending on traffic conditions, this can significantly impact passengers’ pre- and post-cruise travel plans.

Plus, our experienced travel consultants have access to exclusive vacation deals to make sure you get the best value for your time and money. Reservations opened today for a series of four- to eight-day sailings from Norfolk, Va., aboard Carnival Magic in 2023. Norfolk is a beautiful city that also serves as Carnival Cruises’ departure port for the Mid-Atlantic area. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. One of 14 of Carnival Cruise Line’s U.S. homeports, Norfolk is an important part of Carnival’s close-to-home ship deployment strategy where it places vessels near large population bases along the East and West Coasts and Gulf of Mexico. Further details about the shuttle buses and both embarkation and debarkation plans will be provided in the days to come as the cruise departure date draws closer. Norfolk cruises often range from 6-9 nights providing cruisers with a variety of different entertainment and dining options. Think Carnival Cruises for an experience packed with a variety of food, fun-filled activities, lavish entertainment, exciting new places to visit, and fun! While the ship is smaller, Carnival Sunshine does represent a significant commitment to Norfolk with year-round ships. With Carnival Cruise Line hinting at “its biggest-ever operational schedule from Virginia,” however, it stands to reason that additional vessels may be deployed to homeport from Norfolk in the future. Carnival Sunshine, however, is a somewhat smaller Sunshine-class vessel with a gross tonnage of 102,850 and a guest capacity of 3,002 at double occupancy.

There's plenty to find atop this ship, where you can spend your days being kissed by the warm rays of the sun. Visit the biggest Serenity area ever, featuring three decks, plenty of recliners... Carnival WaterWorks™, our onboard waterpark, doesn't just deliver the favorites... There's also SportSquare™, where you can let your inner champion run free (around the jogging track), traverse the Ropes Course high up above, or even engage in a little one-on-one, from ping pong to foosball to giant chess. If you live in the Mid-Atlantic area, might we suggest one of our cruises from Norfolk? Set sail, as thousands of seafaring Americans have, when you book a Carnival cruise from the 400-year-old seaport of Norfolk.

In 2023, Carnival Magic will return to the city, and it is likely that deployment plans are continuing to be refined for late 2023 and 2024. The 8-night sailings will both go to Amber Cove and Grand Turk, and depending on departure date, will also visit either Princess Cays or Half Moon Cay. Currently, Carnival Sunshine is homeported from Charleston, South Carolina, through the end of 2024.

Carnival Cruise Line has opened reservations for cruises on Carnival Magic from Norfolk in 2023. The cruise ship will offer a series of four to eight night sailings with itineraries ranging from Bermuda, to the Bahamas, to Canada/New England. Carnival Cruise Line announced on Thursday, December 15, 2022, that they will be expanding operations from Norfolk with Carnival Sunshine to be homeported from the Old Dominion state beginning in mid-February, 2025. While only two months of sailings in 2025 are currently planned, the cruise line continues to work on scheduling for the future. The ship is scheduled to remain sailing from Baltimore through April 2026, though it is possible that deployment may change if plans to reopen the port to cruise traffic take longer than expected. At this time, however, there is no indication that such a dramatic change may be necessary.

Carnival Sunshine will homeport from Virginia in 2025 as part of the cruise line's biggest deployment ever to Norfolk. Carnival Pride can welcome 2,680 guests aboard at double occupancy, and is also home to approximately 900 international team members. Guests are also being provided a $100 (USD) onboard credit per stateroom as a courtesy for the inconvenience of the changed homeport. If more cruises are moved, we will post the information when it becomes available. While rescue and remdiation efforts continue in Baltimore Harbor following the collapse of the Key Bridge, Carnival and Royal Caribbean will temporarily move cruises from Baltimore to Norfolk. The Carnival Magic sails out of Norfolk and is one of the huge Dream-class ships.

The following cruises have been moved from Baltimore to Norfolk due to the Key Bridge disaster, including a rare Transatlantic repositioning cruise to Spain. If other cruises are moved, we will post the information when it becomes available. In addition to Carnival Cruise Line, ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, TUI Cruises, Swan Hellenic Line, and American Cruise Lines all visit Norfolk. In early 2020, Carnival Cruise Line signed a deal with the City of Norfolk to commit to five years of sailings. That deal was agreed upon before the industry-wide pandemic shutdown, but the cruise line remains committed to Norfolk with this new deployment of Carnival Sunshine.

For additional information on Carnival Cruise Line and to book a cruise vacation, call CARNIVAL, visit , or contact your favorite travel advisor or online travel site. One of 14 of the line’s U.S. homeports, Norfolk is an important part of Carnival’s close-to-home ship deployment strategy where it places vessels near large population bases along the East and West Coasts and Gulf of Mexico. Roughly half of the U.S. population is within a day’s drive of a Carnival homeport, providing guests with a convenient and affordable option for getting to and from their cruise. Everything the sunlight touches on Carnival Sunshine has been doused with an extra dose of fun.

The April 21 cruise is a 7-night, Eastern Caribbean sailing that is planned to visit Grand Turk, Princess Cays, and Freeport, with several days at sea. The ship’s new deployment alternates these Eastern Caribbean itineraries with Bahamas cruises, as well as three special 14-night sailings to Greenland – one departing on May 26, another on August 18, and the last on September 8.
